Statement of the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) on the Expulsion of LUSA and Portuguese Media from Guinea-Bissau
The European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA), representing the leading news agencies across the continent, expresses its deep concern regarding the recent expulsion of Agência Lusa, alongside Portuguese public television (RTP) and radio (RDP), from Guinea-Bissau.
This decision, taken without transparent justification, represents a serious setback for media freedom and pluralism in the country. Independent and reliable journalism is not only a professional duty for media organisations—it is at the basis of the fundamental right of societies to be correctly and timely informed. Restricting this right undermines democratic processes, especially at a moment when citizens most need access to balanced and trustworthy information.
As a long-standing and respected member of EANA, LUSA has consistently upheld the highest standards of impartial, fact-based journalism, serving audiences both in Portugal and beyond. Its work in Guinea-Bissau can be recognised as being essential in connecting communities, fostering understanding between the two countries, and strengthening democratic discourse.
We stand in solidarity with LUSA and call on the authorities in Guinea-Bissau to reconsider this decision, restore access for independent media, and ensure that the principles of press freedom are fully respected. A democratic society cannot thrive without transparency, accountability, and the free flow of information. We reaffirm our commitment to defending unbiased journalism and to supporting all news agencies that face obstacles in carrying out their mission to inform the public truthfully and independently.
