EANA on WPF Day 2026: Safeguarding press freedom means protecting democracies

On this World Press Freedom Day, the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to independent, reliable, and fact-based journalism.

At a time when challenges to the media landscape diversify at an exponential pace, fueled mostly by unchecked technology and regimes with authoritarian tendencies, news agencies play a vital role in ensuring that verified information reaches citizens across the world. Their work is part of the critical infrastructure of democratic societies, supporting informed public debate and decision-making.

EANA stands with journalists everywhere who uphold the principles of accuracy, impartiality, and accountability - often under dangerous circumstances. Safeguarding press freedom is not only about protecting media organizations from unruly influence, it is about protecting democracy itself.

“Press freedom is critical to healthy democracies. I urge all stakeholders to support it by all means necessary, as it’s actually added value to society in all aspects: businesses thrive in clean information ecosystems, politics is fairer and citizens’ rights are better protected when the media functions freely”, said Alexandru Giboi, Secretary General of EANA.
