EANA calls for greater protection of journalists following the tragic death of dpa photographer Anas Alkharboutli

The European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) expresses profound sorrow over the death of dpa photographer Anas Alkharboutli, who was killed in an airstrike near Hama, in Syria. The Board of EANA emphasizes the indispensable role played by war-zone journalists in delivering accurate information from areas otherwise unreachable for the public.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Anas Alkharboutli. Looking around us, the world is faced with events that we would have deemed almost impossible some years ago. In this context, professional journalists that produce real, trustworthy information, are becoming more and more important with each passing day. We need to support and stand up for the people who are putting themselves in harm's way to make sure the public is well-informed,” stated Alexandru Giboi, EANA Secretary General.

Anas Alkharboutli joined dpa as a photographer in 2017, primarily covering the Syrian civil war. His compelling imagery earned international acclaim, including the Young Reporter Trophy at France’s Bayeux Award for war reporting in 2020 and the Sports category at the 2021 Sony World Photography Awards for his series on children practicing karate.

EANA calls upon all stakeholders to ensure the safety of journalists in conflict zones, recognizing their critical role in upholding the principles of free and independent journalism that, in turn, serve the people's right to access trustworthy information.
