Amid press access concerns in the US, the European Alliance of News Agencies highlights the vital role of the Associated Press & of all news agencies as critical sources of verified information
The European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) stands in full support of the Associated Press (AP) as a leading source of independent, fact-based reporting on the United States for media across Europe. AP’s coverage is nonpartisan and vital in ensuring European audiences have access to accurate and timely information on U.S. affairs, reinforcing informed public debate and international understanding. These restrictions are preventing important coverage of the White House from reaching millions of people across Europe who get their news either directly from the AP or via AP’s European partners.
The European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) underscores the essential role of news agencies in providing accurate, reliable, and timely information to the public.
“News agencies serve as critical sources of verified information for media outlets worldwide, contributing to a diverse and well-informed public discourse. Open access to official events is fundamental to this mission and essential for transparency and an informed society. Associated Press journalists being denied access to key spaces such as the Oval Office and Air Force One represent a big concern. Restrictions like these not only impact individual organizations but also hinder the broader media landscape’s ability to inform the public.”, said Alexandru Giboi, Secretary General of EANA.
EANA firmly upholds the right of journalists to access public institutions and report without obstruction and urge all officials to safeguard press freedoms, recognizing the essential role of the news media in maintaining a transparent and democratic information environment.
